Costa Brava is often translated as “wild coast”, as it has a rugged coastline that contains a host of secluded, rocky coves sheltered by pine-covered hills. Costa Brava is situated in the province of Girona, which starts 60 km northeast of Barcelona, and stretches from Blanes until the French border. This Catalonia region of Spain boasts a marvellous coastline with breathtaking views, lush flora and fauna, and exciting parks and wildlife reserves. In the 1950s, Franco’s government decided to convert Costa Brava into a mass tourist destination especially for visitors coming from France, the United Kingdom and Northern European countries. Since then, small towns and villages like Blanes, Lloret de Mar y Tossa de Mar, have become centres of international tourism in Spain. Although for a long time being famous as a package holiday destination, Costa Brava has now become a location with a distinct focus on quality and a favorite for independent travelers. Thereby, while one part of the Costa Brava coastline lent itself to tourist developments on a very large scale, other parts have retained a more traditional look. Medieval villages perched on hilltops, ancient lookout towers and fortified farmhouses still dot the landscape of Costa Brava.
