The City of Marvels (1986) by Eduardo Mendoza (1943-). The novel, which was a bestseller in Spain, chronicles the adventure of a young farmer from the countryside to the economically depressed city of Barcelona between the years of 1888 to 1929. Olivetti, Moulinex, Chafoteaux et Maury (1980) by Quim Monzó (1952-). A collection of 16 humorous short stories, which won the 1981 Catalan Critics´Prize. Quim Monzó currently writes regularly for Barcelona’s daily newspaper La Vanguardia and is also known for his collection of essays, Catorze ciutats comptant-hi Brooklyn, following the tragedy of September 11th in New York City. El quadern gris (“The gray book”) (1966) by Josep Pla (1987-1981). Josep Pla was a controversial Catalan journalist and author during post-civil war Spain. The gray book is a type of biographical account of daily events and his obsession with writing. La plaça del diamant (“The diamond square”) (1962), Mercè Rodoreda (1909-1983). Mercè Rodoreda was arguably one of the most important Catalan writers during post-civil war Spain. The diamond square tells the story of a girl living in Spain after the war and her acceptance of change. |
