Barcelona’s and Catalonia’s cultural dynamism and artistic legacy are always associated with their cosmopolitan image. The artistic heritage of Picasso, Miró, and Dalí, Gaudi’s modernist architecture, and Barcelona’s design tradition are the most prominent, but not the only reference points. Although, Catalan Cinema itself yet has not achieved strong international recognition, an annual film festival held in Sitges is known world wide as one of the best festivals specializing in genre films and can be listed among the primary cultural attractions. Founded in 1967, the festival normally takes place every year in early October in Sitges, a small littoral town located about 40 kilometers South of Barcelona.
Actually, SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia represents the cultural expression with the most media impact in Catalonia, described as a “stimulating universe of encounters, exhibitions, presentations and screenings of fantasy films from all over the world”. The status of the event allows it to receive visits from top-level movie stars, directors and producers like Quentin Tarantino, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Jodie Foster, Paul Verhoeven, Ralph Fiennes, George A. Romero, Cameron Diaz, Rutger Hauer, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Dino de Laurentii, Takashi Miike, Wim Wenders, Tony Curtis, David Cronenberg, Vanessa Redgrave, Darren Aronofsky, Brad Dourif, John McNaughton, Peter Greenaway, John Woo, Park Chan-Wook, Mira Sorvino, Santiago Segura, Narciso Ibáñez Serrador, Guillermo del Toro, Kim Ki Duk, Álex de la Iglesia, Aitana Sánchez Gijón, are among those who, year after year, raise media attraction towards the festival.
The Festival is governed by a Foundation, made up of representatives from the Sitges Town Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalonia’s autonomous government) and other institutions, associations and public and private companies.
